Text to video AI: the complete guide
Text to video means typing what a video should say and getting a finished video back, without filming, editing a timeline or animating anything by hand. With Animatid you describe the video in a sentence or two; Animatid AI writes the script, plans every scene, picks matching photos, clips and music, and animates it all in your brand colors with your logo. You get an MP4 you can post, and you change anything by chatting with it.
This guide covers how text to video works, how to write a prompt that gets a strong first version, which format and length to choose for each platform, how editing works after the first render, what it costs, and how Animatid compares with other AI video tools.
What is text to video, and what kinds are there?
"Text to video" covers two quite different kinds of tools, and knowing which one you need saves a lot of time.
Generated footage
Footage generators, such as Runway or Higgsfield, paint every frame of a short clip from your prompt. They're impressive for cinematic shots of things you can't film: a city at dawn, a product floating in space, a fantasy landscape. Because every pixel is generated, on-screen words and logos tend to warp or misspell, clips are usually a few seconds long, and changing one detail means regenerating the clip and hoping the rest stays the same.
Designed video
Designed video tools build a video the way a motion designer would: scenes with real typography, shapes, icons, charts, photos and clips, animated with professional easing. Animatid is this kind. The AI makes the creative decisions (script, layout, type, motion, pacing), but the words are real text and the logo is your actual file, so they're always exact. Every element can be changed later by asking for it.
How to turn text into a video with Animatid
From a blank page to a downloaded MP4 usually takes a few minutes. Here is the whole process:
- 1Describe the video
Use the form on this page or the New video page. Say what the video is for, who it's for and what viewers should do at the end. One or two sentences is enough; more detail gives you more control.
- 2Choose a format and length
Vertical 9:16 for Reels, TikTok and Shorts, square 1:1 for feeds, or landscape 16:9 for YouTube, websites and presentations. Lengths run from 15 seconds to 2 minutes.
- 3Add your brand and media (optional)
Attach your logo, photos, clips, a voice-over or music, or apply a saved brand kit. Short on media? Animatid adds matching royalty-free stock photos, clips and music for you.
- 4Pick a template or let the AI design it
Leave it on Custom design and Animatid AI designs from scratch, or start from one of the video templates for a proven structure.
- 5Create and review
Animatid AI writes the script, plans the scenes, renders a still of each scene and checks its own frames for layout and readability before rendering the final video.
- 6Change anything by chat, then download
Ask for changes in plain words ("make the headline shorter", "use the blue from our logo") or click the spot on the video you mean. Your first change is free. Download the MP4 when it's right.
How to write a text to video prompt that works
You don't need special syntax. Write the way you'd brief a designer. The more of these four things your prompt includes, the closer the first version will be:
- The goal. What is this video for? A launch, a sale, a hiring post, an explainer, a thank-you to customers.
- The audience. Who will watch it? "Busy restaurant owners" leads to different copy and pacing than "Gen Z shoppers".
- The key message. The one thing viewers should remember. If there are numbers, prices or dates, include them exactly.
- The call to action. What viewers should do next, in the exact words: "Book a demo at penny.app", "Order by Friday".
Put exact wording in quotes
If a headline, tagline or offer has to read a certain way, put it in quotation marks. Animatid AI uses quoted text as written instead of paraphrasing it. Everything else it's free to write for you.
Describe the look, if you have one in mind
Mood words work well: "calm and premium", "bold and energetic", "playful, with hand-drawn shapes". You can also name colors, or simply attach your logo and let the AI take your palette from it. For a very specific look, add a style reference: upload a video you like or paste a YouTube link, and Animatid AI follows its style (layout, type, motion and pacing) with your content.
A 30-second launch video for Penny, a budgeting app for freelancers. Show how it sorts expenses automatically and builds a tax-ready report. Tone: confident and clean. End with "Start your free trial at penny.app".
A vertical video for Rosa's Bakery in Portland. Fresh sourdough every morning, cinnamon rolls on weekends, family-run since 1998. Warm and friendly. End with "Visit us on Alberta Street".
Announce that our online store now ships to Canada. Free shipping on orders over $50 until March 31. Energetic, bold type, our brand colors. CTA: "Shop now at northwind.co".
Choosing the right format and length
Pick the format for where the video will be watched most. You can switch formats later from Design Studio, and Animatid AI re-lays out every scene for the new shape rather than cropping it.
| Where it's going | Format | Good length |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts | Vertical 9:16 | 15 to 30 seconds |
| Instagram and Facebook feed, LinkedIn | Square 1:1 or vertical 9:16 | 15 to 45 seconds |
| YouTube, your website, landing pages | Landscape 16:9 | 30 seconds to 2 minutes |
| Presentations and sales decks | Landscape 16:9 | 30 to 90 seconds |
| Paid social ads | Vertical 9:16 or square 1:1 | 15 to 30 seconds |
Shorter is usually better on social: the first two seconds decide whether people keep watching, so Animatid AI opens with a hook. Longer videos make sense when you're explaining something step by step, such as a product walkthrough or an explainer video.

Editing a text-to-video result
A first version is a starting point. In Design Studio, the page for each video, you chat with Animatid AI to change it, and every message makes a new version while keeping the earlier ones.
Ask in plain words
- "Make the second scene shorter and the headline bigger."
- "Swap the photo in the opening for the one of the storefront."
- "Use a calmer tone and slower music."
- "Change the price to $49 and the date to June 3."
Point at what you mean
Pause the preview, press the crosshair button and click the element you want changed: a word, a photo, a chart bar. Animatid AI sees exactly which element you clicked and the frame it's on, so "make this bigger" just works.
Change the format, length, voice or brand
A message can also switch the video to another format or length, add or change an AI voice-over, or apply a different brand kit. Restoring an earlier version brings back its brand too.
Your first change on each video is free. After that, a change costs the same credits as making a video of that length, and if a change ever fails, its credits are refunded automatically.
Keeping every video on brand
Brand consistency is where most quick video tools fall down. Animatid handles it with brand kits: save your business name, logo, colors, fonts, tone and call to action once, and apply the kit to any video. Your default kit fills in every new video automatically.
- Logo: your actual file, never redrawn, placed with enough contrast to read.
- Colors: up to three brand colors, or the palette measured from your logo.
- Fonts: upload your own or pick from Google Fonts; headings and body text use them.
- Tone: energetic, calm, premium or playful, which shapes copy, motion and music.
- Call to action: the closing line used unless a prompt says otherwise.
Agencies and businesses with several brands can keep a kit for each one and pick the right kit in a click.
Text to video AI tools compared
Every kind of video tool is good at something. Here's how the main approaches compare for a short branded marketing video:
| Approach | Best at | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Designed video (Animatid) | Branded marketing videos with exact text, logo and media, changed by chat | Not for photoreal footage of things that don't exist |
| Footage generators (Runway, Higgsfield) | Cinematic generated shots | Warped text and logos; one change means regenerating |
| Template editors (Canva, CapCut) | Hands-on editing of templates or your own footage | You do the editing and keep the brand consistent yourself |
| Motion design software (After Effects) | Total creative control | Professional skills and hours per video |

Common text to video mistakes
- Vague prompts. "A video about our company" gives the AI nothing to work with. Say who it's for, what it should achieve and what viewers should do.
- Several messages in one short video. A 20-second video can carry one idea. If you have three, make three videos.
- Leaving out the facts. Prices, dates, numbers and URLs make a video useful. Put them in the prompt exactly as they should appear.
- Skipping your own media. If you have product photos, screenshots or footage, attach them. Stock fills gaps, but your own visuals build trust.
- Regenerating instead of editing. You don't need to start over to fix a detail. Ask Design Studio for the change, or click the element you mean.
- One format everywhere. A landscape video posted to Reels gets cropped. Make the vertical version for social with one message.
How much does text to video cost?
Animatid has no subscription. You pay per video with credits, which never expire, and a new account's first video is free (no card required; trial videos are 720p with a small watermark). One credit covers up to 20 seconds of video:
| Length | Credits | With an AI voice-over |
|---|---|---|
| 15 or 20 seconds | 1 | 2 |
| 30 seconds | 2 | 3 |
| 45 or 60 seconds | 3 | 5 |
| 90 seconds | 5 | 8 |
| 2 minutes | 6 | 9 |
Paid videos download in 1080p without a watermark. See pricing for the current price per credit, or read what an explainer video costs for how this compares with agencies and freelancers.
Tips for better text to video results
- Lead with the outcome, not the feature. "Get paid twice as fast" beats "Automated invoice reminders" as an opening line.
- Give real numbers. Prices, percentages and dates make videos specific and believable, and they're shown exactly.
- Attach your own photos when you have them. Real product shots and real people beat stock for trust. Up to 20 photos and 8 clips per video.
- Let the music follow the mood. Say "upbeat" or "calm" and Animatid picks a stock track with a fitting tempo, with scene cuts timed to the beat.
- Make one change per message when it matters. Several small, clear requests are easier to get exactly right than one long list.
- Reuse what works. Use one of your finished videos as the template for the next one and it keeps the look with new content.
